August 2024

In August, the Federation of Amhara Associations in Europe formally reached out to prominent international financial institutions, including the IMF and World Bank, regarding their loan agreements with the Ethiopian government. Our correspondence conveyed significant concerns regarding these financial commitments in light of the persistent turmoil in Ethiopia, characterized by civil unrest and an escalating economic crisis. We underscored the conflicts in Tigray, Amhara, and Oromia, drawing attention to the regime's dependence on funds allocated for military operations that infringe upon human rights. We emphasized the disparity between Abiy Ahmed's public declarations of peace and the harsh realities experienced by the populace. We urged these institutions to reassess their loan agreements, cautioning that continued financial support could exacerbate suffering and contribute to the emergence of unsustainable debt as the regime approaches a potential collapse.

September 2024

This month, we addressed two crucial letters to organizations regarding the alarming situation in Ethiopia's Amhara region. Our first communication raised concerns about the Ethiopian regime's airstrikes and drone attacks, which resumed after the rainy season. We highlighted severe government actions, including indiscriminate bombings, property destruction, and regional violence. We called for international pressure to end these abuses and protect civilians. In our second letter on behalf of the Federation of Amhara Associations in Europe, we urged humanitarian assistance amid a protracted civil war and a crippling blockade. We also emphasized the need for ICRC intervention for the captured government combatants to assess the situation and deliver aid. Through these efforts, we aim to mobilize international attention and trigger immediate action in response to the humanitarian crisis in Ethiopia's Amhara region.

July 2024

Prompt action is required in Ethiopia following the abduction of 160 students from their campus in the Oromia region. There are reports of targeted attacks on Amhara people by high-ranking officials, and families of victims being coerced into paying ransom money to government bank accounts. It is imperative that these incidents are thoroughly investigated and that the perpetrators are held accountable. We call on the international community to exert pressure on Ethiopian authorities to guarantee the safety of all citizens.

OIG2 3

June 2024

The situation in Amhara poses ongoing humanitarian challenges, highlighting the need for urgent attention to the unfolding civil unrest. Increasing military spending and a lack of resources for basic needs have contributed to a growing sense of unrest. Historical marginalization has entrenched the conflict and fueled support for armed factions. The Amhara region continues to be negatively impacted by regime-led conscription, which has added to existing tensions between ethnic groups. An international intervention is urged to support peaceful measures towards resolving the conflict and minimizing further bloodshed.

OIG2 2

May 2024

Despite repeated warnings from the European Center for Justice and numerous recommendations from the US Ambassador for a peaceful solution, it is concerning that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's speeches often contain aggressive and divisive language. The European Center for Justice has called for government officials to take action to prevent further escalation of the conflict caused by such language. To find a peaceful resolution, it is necessary to prioritize open communication and cooperation between all parties involved in the conflict. Only through mutual compromise can we hope to achieve lasting peace and stability in the region. Let us work together towards a brighter future for Ethiopia and its people.

OIG2 2

April 2024

Our objective during the month of April was to raise awareness about the brutalities inflicted upon the innocent Amhara civilians. Despite the lack of media coverage, we remain committed to persisting in our efforts to expose these atrocities and call for action. We firmly believe that unity has the power to overcome challenges, and our unwavering dedication to promoting it will continue. Let us join hands for justice, equality, and peace for all members of the Amhara community.

OIG2 3

March 2024

The Amhara region in Ethiopia is in dire need of international intervention due to ethnic-based violence, atrocities, and displacement. The conflict has also affected agricultural activities, leading to food insecurity and the potential for famine. A 220-day internet blockade limits communication channels, hindering media access to report human rights violations. To address this crisis, the Ethiopian government must prioritize people's rights by lifting the state of emergency and complying with UN resolutions.

OIG2 1

January 2024

In January, concerns were raised about violations of human rights, economic downturn, and conflicts in the Amhara and Oromo regions under the leadership of Abiy Ahmed. The army should be withdrawn, and more aid should be delivered to address the crisis of turmoil, economic hardship, and human rights violations. Dialogue and reform are crucial for restoring peace and trust.

The Amhara Advocacy Group in Europe thanks for the assistance to Ethiopians during challenging times. However, concerns are raised about certain EU member states compromising EU values by closely aligning with the Ethiopian government. The group advises a cautious approach towards supporting the current regime due to ongoing conflict. They urge a reassessment of engagements that might inadvertently sustain harmful actions. The letters focus on prioritizing the well-being of Ethiopians over political expediency and economic interests. They emphasize the need for a compassionate and thoughtful approach in all dealings related to Ethiopia, promoting peace, protect civilian lives, and sustainable development. The overall aim is to encourage empathy and responsible decision-making in all matters concerning Ethiopia.
